Imphal. Nov. 28. World’s tallest pier bridge is coming up in the north-eastern state of Manipur in India as part of 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal railway project, It will connect Imphal, the capital of Manipur with the broad gauge network in the rest of India.
Standing tall at a height of 141 metres, the upcoming bridge is expected to surpass the height of 139-metre-high Mala – Rijeka viaduct, Montenegro in Europe. The work of the bridge is expected to be complete by 2023. The first phase has already been completed. The anticipated cost of the bridge is Rs 374 crore. Around 60 percent of the 111 km rail line passes through tunnels.
With the completion of the project, the 111 km distance between Jiribam and Imphal could be covered in less than 2.5 hours. Presently, it takes around 10-12 hours to cover the distance by road.
