Balrampur (UP) Dec.11. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched Saryu Nahar National Project, an irrigation project, the work of which began 50 years ago and was completed recently after huge cost escalation. The project which became notorious for delay and official red tape links five rivers flowing through Uttar Pradesh to provide irrigation to 14 lakh hectares of farmland in eastern UP benefitting 29 lakh farmers.
Pointing out the red tape in bureaucracy and inefficiency of previous governments that ruled Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Modi said while the initial estimated cost of the project was just Rs 100 crore, the expense incurred when it was completed is Rs 9600 crore. The real work was done in the last four years by Yogi Adityanath government, he said.
Whose money was lost by the delay of the project? Mr. Modi asked. Will you not punish those responsible for such apathy in managing public resources? He asked. The Prime Minister pointed out that such huge sums lost by negligence could have been spent for greater common good, if the project had been completed as per schedule. He said his government has cleared the Rs 45,000 crore Ken Betwa project which would end water shortage in Budelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh.
