Thrissur, Nov. 28. Kerala media has reported that the authorities are mulling to control the movement of heavy cargo carrying trucks through Kuthiran tunnel along Thrissur – Palakkad highway during the peak hours from 4 p.m to 8 p.m to ease traffic blocks.
The tunnel, along with approach roads have been witnessing traffic snarls in the last couple of days after the existing tunnel was opened for two-way traffic between Palakkad and Thrissur. Currently, the work of the second tunnel at Kuthiran has begun, forcing the traffic either way; ie from Palakkad to Thrissur and Thrissur to Palakkad pass through the same tunnel. The chaos is pointed out to be resulting from that.
Meanwhile, Kerala revenue minister K Rajan who intervened in the issue has directed the district collector of Thrissur to convene a meeting of collectors of neighbouring districts of Ernakulam and Palakkad to find a solution. The second tunnel is also expected to be commissioned by January next year.
