Tamil Nadu launches own Cement brand Valamai to control prices

Chennai. Nov. 16. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin today launched a new cement brand Valamai (meaning mighty) manufactured by Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation Ltd (TANCEM) at a function at Government Secretariat, Chennai. Mr Stalin said the new brand will bring relief to the industry and the common man who are reeling under the staggering price rise of construction materials.

The new cement brand from (TANCEM) has two varieties which are priced Rs 350 and 365 per bag, said industries minister Tangam Tennarasu. A transportation charge of Rs 30-35 may be added to it, said Mr. Tennarasu after the launch. He said the new cement is quick setting has greater compression strength and is heat resistant. It will be available in open markets also, apart from company outlets. As of now, 30,000 MT of the brand will made be available in the market every month. The new brand is expected to give a fillip to the construction sector.

Meanwhile it is pointed out that the price of Valamai is far higher than Amma brand of Cement introduced by previous AIADMK government at Rs 190 per bag. Amma brand will remain. Mr. Tennarasu claimed that the higher price of the Valamai cement is because of the modern technology involved in manufacturing it.

TANCEM first operated from Alangulam in Virudunagar district with a single plant of capacity two lakh metric tonnes (MT) per annum. It has now added two more cement plants at Ariyalur district with a total capacity of 17 lakh MT per annum and has been marketing a cement brand named Arasu.
